E-Book: More, T (2005) Utopia

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/2130/2130-h/2130-h.htm

In the book by Thomas More (2005) written in the year 1516, he invites people to consider their ideal world or situation. This suggests the view that there shall be different perceptions of that ideal according to the person’s subjectivity.

More states;

I earnestly beg you would describe that island very particularly to us; be not too short, but set out in order all things relating to their soil, their rivers, their towns, their people, their manners, constitution, laws, and, in a word, all that you imagine we desire to know; (More, 2005)

He has invited the person to describe in detail what they would desire their ideal place or situation and how it should function. In short to describe their utopia from their own view ideal.

More further suggests:

If an accident has so lessened the number of the inhabitants of any of their towns that it cannot be made up from the other towns of the island without diminishing them too much (More, 2005)

Again More suggests an ideal situation, perfection despite changing situations to ensure an ideal balance is retained. How realistic an ideal may be is open to question.

Inside front cover

Fronting the harbour, The Parade was formerly Margate's premier location for visitor amenities. It contained hotels, shops, baths and a library, and was a fashionable promenade.

Frontispiece

The eastern expansion of Margate was so extensive that it became known as Margate New Town and later Cliftonville. As well as developing a social distinction, the high chalk cliffs provided a scenic contrast to the low-lying seafront around the harbour.

Margate Seafront, c1890-1910. Observed from Marine Gardens, sea bathing from bathing machines at high tide makes for popular viewing by visitors along Marine Terrace and Marine Drive.

Dexter Dalwood
(born England, 1960)
The Poll Tax Riots, 2005

Oil on canvas
Private collection, London

Dexter Dalwood constructs imagined scenes which act as memorials to his visions of recent history. Although inspired by the violent demonstration against the Poll Tax in Trafalgar Square in 1990, this painting is no accurate document. Graffiti-covered walls tower over the crowd and Nelson's Column is nowhere to be seen; the demonstrations in central London seem to have merged with those in Berlin and Eastern Europe the previous year.

James Webb

This painting depicts Margate seen from towards the end of pier, which formerly stood close to where turner Contemporary is now situated. The pier opened to the public in 1855 and was finally destroyed in a storm in 1978. Many of the buildings visible in the background no longer exist; some, including the prominent Holy Trinity Church with the tall tower to the left, were destroyed during the second World War.

The artist James Webb (1825-1895) was a prominent British painter who exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy and the British Institute in London. An admirer of JW Turner, he was known for his landscapes and especially his marine scenes like this one, which he painted in light colours. This painting was known as one of Webb's finest works.

A view of Margate from the Pier was brought to Margate in 1925 having been discovered in Harrogate by a town councillor. It was purchased by the local council with the help of donations from members of the community. It was the first artwork acquired for a proposed new art gallery in Margate though the plans were not realised at the time. The painting hung in Margate Library in Victoria Road until its closure in 1974 when it was moved to the new Library in Cecil Square, and then more recently to the Winter Gardens .

Dreamland, Margate

Background

Just before Christmas 1919, and almost exactly one year after the end of the Great War, John Henry Iles Purchased Margate's The Hall By The Sea, thus initiating the history of what would become Dreamland. Iles had a vision for turning the dance and music hall, previously run by the colourful-showman 'Lord' George Sanger, into an American-style amusement park. This vision would come to shape culture, employment, architecture, politics and entertainment in Margate for most of the next century.

The Scenic Railway opened amidst the pleasure gardens and amusements in 1920 and was an immediate hit; the neon signage of the shockingly modern Dreamland Cinema first lit up the night sky in 1935; and Dreamland cemented its position as the premiere amusement park in the South East of England.

Project

After almost 90 years of operation it was announced that Dreamland would close for redevelopment into housing and retail units. Recognising the site's important place in history the Save Dreamland Campaign led the charge to preserve the amusement park, its listed roller coaster, animal cages and cinema to ensure Dreamland continues to play a central role in the tourism economy of Margate.

Now the Dreamland Trust (Which administers the Campaign) is steering the project forward and working in partnership with Thanet District Council and Margate Town Centre Regeneration Company Ltd to create a brand new, unique and quintessentially British visitor attraction for Margate, re-establishing Dreamland as one of the UK's best-loved amusement parks.

Vision

Work is underway to open the world's first amusement park of thrilling historic rides, classic sideshows, vintage cafe's, special events, festivals and gardens. This contemporary attraction represents a multi-million pound investment in the future of Margate, with funding already secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sea Change and Thanet District Council.

The new Dreamland will be living, breathing visitor attraction, with many exciting rides, some the last surviving example of their kind, rescued from around the UK. Dreamland will be reinstated as a place that resounds with the sights, sounds and atmosphere that make for the classic amusement park experience. This  decade will be as significant for Dreamland as the 1920's were, offering the chance for our bold vision to thrill visitors for generations to come.

Darmir Sagolj, Thailand, image 126, page 129

'April and May 2010 saw protests in Thailand escalating and becoming more violent than anybody had expected. Covering such terrible developments was a big challenge: we knew we needed our best shooters out in the city 24/7 to make sure we didn't miss a single piece of the complex bigger picture. Even the experience of a number of conflicts i was still shocked by the street battles i saw in Bangkok. Many businessmen, residents and people in flip-flops and T-shirts had decided it was totally safe to stand shoulder to shoulder on the streets, despite the bombs exploding and bullets flying. The reporters wearing flak jackets must have asked themselves-"are we taking it too seriously?" well, no-people were getting shot and killed.'

'Much of the day was spent in a Black Hawk helicopter with members of the Alabama Army National Guard, flying over the coastline to access the barriers protecting the shore from the oil leak. I spent a lot of time while covering the spill trying to connect the gushing oil (miles offshore and out of sight) with the Alabama coast and the people who lived there-what was at stake for them and the environment, who would be affected and how? Looking down i could see the hay bales protecting the beach around the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and the Dauphin Island sea Lab. There was talk about various technologies used to protect beaches, and i was struck by the low-tech use of hay. What i could not have known when i got into the helicopter was that, despite the near-constant news coverage and the presence of tar on the beaches, these women would be sitting in the sun, protected by hay bales.' 'The picture shows the daughter of Israeli Lieutenant-Colonel Dov Harari, a reservist killed in a skirmish between the Israeli and lebanese armies, saluting beside her father's grave during his funeral in Netanya. Harai was killed after Lebanese Army troops fired warning shots at Israeli soldiers along the usually quiet but tense frontier. The weather was very hot and humid on the day of the funeral, and many people had come to pay their respects. After the crowded official ceremony was over i found myself pushed towards the graveside, a witness to this emotional and highly personal moment: a girl's gesture of admiration for her father'.
