“Man in the Mirror” debuted in 1988 and was directed by Don Wilson. Jackson does not appear; rather, the video consists entirely of news clips and notable footage of major figures of the 20th century, including Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Ronald Reagan, and others. The video is highly emotional, yet ultimately triumphant; it shows scenes in mounting intensity of starvation, racism, violence, and destruction, then dramatically shifts to a final message of peace, hope and optimism. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and Jackson performed it at the 1988 Grammy Awards.
